SIVAN 22

Straight

The precepts of Adonai are RIGHT, rejoicing the heart. (Ps 19:8 CJB, emphasis mine)

The Hebrew word yâshâr (Strong’s H3477) is the word that has been translated as “right”.  It is first, an adjective, a word that tells us something about a noun, in this case, the subject of the sentence: the “precepts of Adonai”.  The meaning of the word yâshâr is straight, correct, proper, and implying that which is upright and righteous.

When searching for an antonym (the opposite of) for the word ‘right’, there were several in the list that jumped out and caught my attention. “Illegitimate, unlawful and corrupt”[1] were the three words that spoke the loudest; combined they would suggest anything that violates the precepts of Torah.  ‘Crooked’ is the direct opposite of ‘straight’ (one of the words used to define yâshâr), and those things that are referred to as ‘crooked’ are usually done so with a negative connotation, for example, a ‘crooked politician’.  That which is straight, therefore, would be that which is correct, right and true:  Elohim’s Torah.

We are told in our opening verse that the ‘precepts’ of our Elohim are worth rejoicing over, and they will bring joy and excitement to our hearts.  I would suggest to you that the only way this could happen is if we are adhering to the “precepts of Adonai”, and enjoying the security such a lifestyle brings.

Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart. (Jer 15:16)

For I delight in the Torah of Elohim according to the inward man …” (Rom 7:22)
