KISLEV 26
Hanukkah 3rd Night
“Adonai went before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead the way and in a pillar of fire by night TO GIVE THEM LIGHT. So they could travel both day and night.” (Ex 13:21 TLV, emphasis mine)
There is much than can be learned from this passage of Torah; however, the thought that I wish to focus on is that the purpose of this cloud/light was to “give them light”. Whether we are walking in the night, or in the full light of day, having a path clearly defined for us is critical. It is an undisputed fact that our Creator cares so much about where we are going that He is resolved to furnish us with the light to do so; in itself, this is something worth pondering over.
Most of us have at least one night-light somewhere in our house, especially those that still have young children living at home, or like myself, older in years, and prone to be a little unsteady in the middle of the night. To know that the night-light is there to assist me in my nocturnal wanderings provides a sense of security – I don’t believe that any of us enjoy walking into objects sight unseen.
Our Elohim is the same way. It is never His desire that we make a wrong turn or walk into an object looming up in our way, causing us injury and irritation. His light is always there, always available for us to walk in, and it is called ‘the Torah walk’. Only by learning the instruction manual will we have His light on our path.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Ps 119:105 TLV)
“And I shall lead the blind by a way they have not known – in paths they have not known I lead them. I MAKE DARKNESS LIGHT BEFORE THEM, and crooked places straight. These matters I shall do for them, and I shall not forsake them.” (Isa 42:16 ISR, emphasis mine)
