His Name
“…let Your Name be set-apart ...” (Mat 6:9)
Instead of “set-apart”, many Bible translations read “hallowed,
sanctified, kept holy, and honored”, all of which provides input into this
verse. However, do we really understand what this sanctified
and set-apart process means?
Noah Webster includes within his different definitions for “sanctify”
the following: “To cleanse from
corruption; to purify from sin; to make holy by detaching the affections from
the world and its defilements, and exalting them to a supreme love to God; To
sanctify God, to praise and celebrate him as a holy being; to acknowledge and
honor his holy majesty, and to reverence his character and laws. Isa 8.”[1]
Our opening verse reads
“set-apart”, which appears to be the most accurate translation, in that we set His Name apart from all that is common
and mundane. Would that we would always
honor His Name, always set it apart
from all corruption, ugliness and defilement that this world reeks with.
But why His Name? Because His
Name is who He is. He is Elohei
Kedem, the Eternal God; He is Elohim Chayim, the Living God; He is Elohim
Avinu, God our Father; the Elohim Emet, the God of truth; and the El Hannora, the Awesome
God. He is Adonai Tsedeq, the Lord our
righteousness; He is Elohei Mikkarov,
the God who is near; and He is the Adon Kol-ha’arets, the Master of all the earth. He is Yahweh our Elohim, our Creator, the El Gibbor, the Mighty God, whom we choose to serve.
Messiah Yeshua was quoting directly from the Amidah when He spoke our opening phrase. The Amidah
reads: “We
will sanctify your name in this world just as it is sanctified in
the highest heavens”.[2] From this we learn that it is up to us to revere, honor, and set-apart His
name in this world, representing all that He is. Amein …
“O יהוה, our Master, how excellent is Your Name in all the earth, You
who set Your splendour above the heavens!” (Ps 8:1)
“I make known Your
Name to My brothers; In the midst of the assembly I praise You.” (Ps 22:22)
“I cause Your Name to
be remembered in all generations; Therefore the people praise You forever and
ever.” (Ps 45:17)
