Restore
“He refreshes and restores my life (my self) …” (Ps 23:3 AMPC)
Among the definitions found in Mr.
Webster’s Dictionary for the word ‘restore’ is “to repair; to rebuild; to revive; to
resuscitate; to bring back to life,”[1]
and truthfully, this completes the picture of the first two verses of this
Psalm. Because our Creator is our Shepherd, He cares for us, leading us to
nourishing pastures where we can eat our fill, and quenching our thirst with
the life-giving water that only He
provides. When we are full and sated,
our entire being is renewed, revived, refreshed, and restored. Thank You,
Father!
Most translations use the word ‘soul’ in
this verse; in the Hebrew, it is the word nephesh
(Strong’s H5315) and is one of those all-inclusive words that means so much
more than what has been translated. Nephesh refers to the inner person inside, all that makes
you You: your character traits, your emotions, your
intellect – even all your past brilliant decisions that have brought you to
where you are today. This is what needs the refreshing, the
renewing, and the restoration, that we might all grow into the image of the
Son, Yeshua our Messiah.
“Restore to me the joy of Your deliverance,
And uphold me, Noble Spirit!” (Ps 51:12)
