CHESHVAN

To
Lead Your Household
The “Stone
Edition of the Chumash” translates our opening verse in the following manner:
“For I have loved him, because he commands his children and his
household after him that they keep the way of Hashem …”[1]
(emphasis mine). To paraphrase, because Abraham commands his children
and household in the ways of Elohim, our Creator knows, and has a love for,
Abraham.
Some of us
came into this Torah walk after our
children had grown up and ‘left the nest’, meaning that we no longer can teach
and instruct our children in their early years, concerning the ways of our Elohim, as found in the
pages of Torah. We now must let our
lives bear witness to the truth that our Father has revealed to us, praying
always that Abba would speak to our children, draw them, give them ears to
hear, eyes to see, and a heart that eagerly accepts the words of His Torah.
My husband
and I have six children, an even dozen grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren, with none of them involved in the Torah lifestyle. However, when our children/grandchildren come
to visit us, my husband (as the priest of our home, just as Abraham was)
requires them to accept and act according to the instructions of Torah. At times, it has been uncomfortable for them,
such as on Erev Shabbat, but out of
respect for us, and the God of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, they choose to submit. And we continue to pray …
Parents,
those of you with young children, work together diligently to teach your young
ones a respect and a reverence for Elohim, and His ways. Fathers, I believe that there is a special
blessing for you as you lead your household in this Torah walk, for our Father
is not one to choose favorites (see Acts 10:34-34). What He did for Abraham, He can also do for
you. And just as He did for Abraham, He
will show you the way …
“For He raised a
witness in Yaʽaqoḇ, And set a Torah in Yisra’ĕl, Which He commanded
our fathers, To teach them to their children; That it might be known to a
generation to come, To children who would be born, To rise up and relate them to their children, And place their trust in Elohim, And not
forget the works of Ěl …” (Ps 78:5-7)
