CHESHVAN
19
So
THAT
“For I have known him, so that he commands his
children and his household after him, to guard the way of יהוה, to do righteousness and right-ruling, SO THAT יהוה brings to Aḇraham what He has
spoken to him.” (Gen 18:19 ISR, emphasis mine)
The
Hebrew word translated here as ‘that’ is the word ma‛an (Strong’s
H4616), and indicates to us a purpose, intent, or a reason for an action. With this definition in mind, may I suggest
that the reason our Elohim intended
to bring to fruition all that He had promised Abraham, was because He knew Abraham, and recognized that
Abraham (and his household) walked in all the ways of the Creator.
We are told, repeatedly, obedience is better, or greater, than
sacrifice (see 1Sam 15:22, Hos 6:6).
However, we must first understand who
and what it is that we are to be
obedient to. Do we “know that יהוה, He is Elohim; He has made us, and we are
His – His people and the sheep of His pasture” (Ps 100:3)? Do we recognize that “the sum of His word is truth, and all His righteous right-rulings are forever”
(Ps 119:160)? Do we comprehend that if
we call ourselves children of the Living Elohim,
we are expected to “guard, and obey all these words which I command you, that
it might be well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what
is good and right in the eyes of יהוה your Elohim” (Deu 12:28)?
Can
we use Abraham as our example, walking in the ways of our Creator, and
continually instructing those of our household in the foundation of the Torah?
“I love those who love me, And those who earnestly
seek me do find me.” (Pro 18:17
