Elul 8
Boxed In
“You have closed me in, behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.” (Ps 139:5 ISR)
Some years ago, one
of our mares was expecting her first foal, and we determined that we would
allow her to foal out in one of our pastures, which is what she did. However, once the foal was several days old,
we wanted to catch mom and baby, with the intent of working with the foal, and
getting it used to human hands. Not
happening. That mare ran us all over the
pasture for more than half an hour before we were finally able to corner her,
and ‘lay our hand upon her.’ Once she
knew she was caught, she was quiet and submissive, which is her usual
disposition.
So it is with us ‘sheeple’. We tend to get a ‘wild hair up our petoots’,
and run ourselves ragged all over the place until such time as our Father
allows circumstances and situations to ‘close us in’, where He can get His
hands on us. How many times have we
found ourselves in a place where we didn’t know what to do? There was no moving forward, backward, up or
down; it was all that we could do to simply stand. It is in these tight places that Elohim has
our undivided attention.
The month of Elul,
including the first ten days of Tishri, is just such a place. We are boxed in, with nowhere to turn, and
our Creator must have our complete
focus. His purpose is to ‘perfect those
things that concern us’, a process that includes removing all of the trash and
junk that we think we need to hang on
to. And the end goal is becoming the
kind of person that our Elohim would want to spend eternity with, always
reflecting the character and person of Messiah Yeshua.

“Search me, O Ěl,
and know my heart; Try me, and know my thoughts; And see if an
idolatrous way is in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” (Ps 139:23-24 ISR)
