Iyar 24
Mothers
The
second Sunday in May has been set aside, here in the United States of America,
as Mother’s Day, a tradition that began in the early 20th
century. Many nations throughout the international
community have also established one day in the year to honor and esteem all
mothers, and while this is good and noteworthy, do we really understand what the love of a mother is all about? And yet, a mother’s love is probably the best
example of the heart of our Father that we have, a heart filled with unconditional
love, a love beyond measurement.
Unconditional love cannot be measured
by any standard of measurement known to natural man, for the natural mind
cannot understand a love that has no conditions attached to it. It is a picture of giving without expecting
anything in return, and it is totally self-less
in its giving, desiring only the best for the one that it is focused upon. While discipline and correction may be a
part of the “love without measure”, it is applied with the challenge of
improving and instructing the recipient of this love. Is this not an accurate picture of what the
love of a mother for her child is all about?
While mothers are not perfect, and
just as often are prone to make mistakes, the affection that a mother has for
her child is a bond that under normal circumstances, cannot be broken. As we approach this day of festivity and
celebration, please, let us all remember that if was not for our mothers, we
would not even exist. Even if just for
that, it is a reason to give them honor.
Please understand, I am not “down
playing” or ignoring the extreme examples of bad motherhood that, unfortunately, flood our society. Some of you reading this may have had a
personal experience with a bad
mother. It is my hope that we can all
focus on what a Torah observant, Elohim loving mother would be like, and strive
to be that example for our children.
Ladies, I would honor you.
“Respect your father
and your mother, so that your days are prolonged upon the soil which יהוה your Elohim is giving you.”
