Iyar 1
Always
“…All the days of my life
…” (Ps 23:6 ISR)
Us humans tend to
measure our time in a myriad of ways: “in a minute”; “couple of hours later”; “in
a few days”; “weeks ago”; “next month”; and “years gone by”. And yet, it is our Creator that first
introduced the concept of time, first with one day, then with a seven day week
(see Gen 1 and 2), followed by the number of days in a lunar cycle, and finally
with the concept of a year, which incorporated the four seasons (Gen 1:14).
The image
presented by the phrase “all the days of my life” is different for each one of
us; for a young adult, it encompasses many years, yet for a mature senior, it
is of a much shorter duration. How can
we know the number of years of our life?
To be honest, I do not think we can accurately know this – in spite of
what Ps 90:10 says. The book of Job
tells us that “Man born of woman is of few days and
turmoil-filled” (Job 14:1), and that “since his days are
decided, the number of his months is with You, You have appointed his bounds
which he does not pass over.” (Job 14:5)
It is up to Elohim who, in His wisdom, will decide the length of the
life we live on this earth.
We are also told
to “number our days” (Ps 90:10), a
thought that which, in the Hebrew, carries with it the idea of preparing, and
assigning (see Strong’s #H4487). Further
instructions coming from the Brit
Chadashah (New Testament) tell us to “See then that you walk exactly, not as
unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are wicked” (Eph
5:15-16). I propose that “redeeming the
time” carries with it the same idea of “numbering our days”, which in turn
would point to the way we are to “walk”, which would equal Torah.
And when I choose
Elohim as my Shepherd, and diligently follow hard after Him, walking in His ways,
then He is the One that has control
over “all the days of my life.” Amein.
“One matter I asked of יהוה –
this I seek: To dwell in the House of יהוה ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE, To see the
pleasantness of יהוה, And to inquire in His Hĕḵal.” (Ps 27:4 ISR, emphasis mine)
