Shevat 15
To Cleave
“But ye that did CLEAVE unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.” (Deu 4:4 KJV , emphasis mine)
“But you who are CLINGING
to יהוה your
Elohim are alive today, every one of you.”
(Deu 4:4 ISR, emphasis mine)
Memory foam is a fascinating substance, and I can
still remember when I purchased my first memory foam pillow. I would watch in amazement the indentation of
my handprint, when I continuously pressed my open hand in different places on
the pillow. How the foam would mold itself
to the shape of my hand was a source of wonder to me, and it still is. Amazing stuff, this memory foam.
In a sense, we
are to be like this “memory foam”, molding and shaping ourselves around the
person and character of our Elohim. The
word translated in our opening verse into the word “cleave”, is related to the Hebrew word dābaq
(Strong’s #H1692), which is the word found in Genesis 2:24, speaking of the “joining
together” (cleaving) of Adam and Eve. Just as Adam is to “cleave” to his wife, in other words, be united
with, stick and adhere to, join to, abide with, be welded and be molded to, so
are we to “cleave” to our YHWH Elohim.
It is not unusual to find a married couple, (traditionally,
a man and a woman) who have spent their entire adult lives married to each
other, and end up resembling one
another other. Not only in physical
appearance, but their mannerisms, and their similar forms of speech, will
reflect a lifetime spent with one another.
Can people say the same of us? Do
we reflect the One that we are
supposed to be “cleaving” to? May we all
be glued – like Super-Gorilla-Glue – to the One
who gives and sustains life, and let us reflect His light to this dying world.
“Only, diligently guard to do the command and the
Torah which Mosheh the servant of יהוה commanded you, to love יהוה your Elohim, and to walk in all His ways, and to guard His
commands, and to cling to Him, and to
serve Him with all your heart and with all your being.” (Jos 22:5 ISR,
emphasis mine)
